TPL042 Report

The Twitter Premier League crossed the Niger for the first time as the Enugu edition launched in the Coal city on Saturday the 19th of March. The weekend saw the fans and friends of the four teams representing the main areas of Enugu come out for a day of fun, football and food.

Oringo FC took on FC Bisalla in the first match of the event, with Amobi Ezeaku the NPL side Enugu Rangers coach taking the guest of honour kickoff. Oringo FC drew first blood in the first half and raced away to a 2 – 0 lead. The rampaging FC Bisalla pulled one back and were relentless until the last kick of the game where they managed a last gasp equaliser. The knockout match had to go to penalties where again FC Bisalla came from behind to dispatch Oringo FC.

The second “semifinal” saw Conné FC take on Otigba FC in another match that saw the colourful Conné FC knocked out by a resilient Otigba, who went on to join FC Bisalla in the finals. The heavens opened and the skies emptied their contents on the UNEC pitch venue for the final match but that was not enough to stop the players from putting up an entertaining “rain ball” display for the fans who watched keenly from their sheltered seats. The contest between FC Bisalla and Otigba FC remained barren even after extra time, leading to the second penalty shootout of the day involving FC Bisalla.

The nail-biting penalty shootout saw each side miss one in the regular rounds, extending the kicks to sudden death where FC Bisalla once again proved their superiority at football’s Russian roulette. The wild scenes of jubilation from the audience were testament to the deep feelings of identification for the teams representing the Enugu zones. FC Bisalla went home with the grand prize of 50,000 naira while the runners up Otigba were consoled by the 20,000 naira payout.

As usual at the end of every TPL event, the only question on everyone’s lips was “When is the next edition?”
